North Model United Nations 2020

North Model United Nations

Burnaby’s Premiere Weekend Conference

March 7-8, 2020

To the Model United Nations Community,

It is with great pleasure that I invite you to attend the second-ever iteration of North Model United Nations (NorthMUN), to be held on the weekend of March 7-8, 2020 at BCIT Burnaby. NorthMUN is one of Western Canada’s largest student-led simulations of the United Nations, attracting the largest delegate attendance among single-day conferences at our inaugural session in 2019. With our newfound position as a leading platform for dialogue and expression, this year we’ve had the privilege of seeking higher goals and making a greater impact within our community. Our mission is to raise awareness on relevant world issues and to empower youth with a sense of responsibility as well as the necessary skills for diplomacy. This event is the second of what we hope will become an annual summit dedicated to helping construct the future of international cooperation and connecting a fast-moving generation of individuals in an increasingly complex world.

This year, delegates in our eight committees, each reflecting a real UN body, will discuss a wide variety of pressing world issues. These include the challenges regarding armed conflicts, environmental disasters, international trade, hunger, health and poverty. Over the course of two days, conference participants will examine and discuss critical developments relating to these issues and formulate a resolution that is constructed of innovative solutions from the perspectives of their chosen nation.

We are focused on four core pillars: accessibility, understanding, teamwork, and forward-thinking. We sincerely believe that the Model UN community needs to end the economic divide, not heighten it. As a result, we are taking every action to allow delegates to attend our conference at an affordable price point and at a location most suitable for economical and environmentally-friendly transport. Parents, teachers and delegates alike can rest easy knowing that the NorthMUN team consists of highly dedicated individuals not unlike themselves that are knowledgeable about international politics and are passionate about their work. As such, the expectation is that delegates will also strive for excellence. We strongly encourage delegates not to compete with each other, but to maintain a collaborative mindset throughout the conference. This attitude mirrors the spirit of the real-world United Nations, where 80% of successful resolutions are adopted in consensus.

We are a community of ambitious and forward-thinking students who see a bigger picture and try to tackle some of the world’s most pressing problems. With a naturally diverse Secretariat team, building upon the momentum of the inaugural NorthMUN 2019. I am confident that this iteration of NorthMUN will empower today’s youth to become tomorrow’s leaders.

If you’d like more information on our collective undertaking, feel free to contact us or browse our website. May the minds of today collaborate to build a brighter tomorrow!
